Men's Basketball History
Team History
The Carleton Ravens men’s basketball team is the winningest program in Canada. With eighteen national championships all coming within a dominant 23-year window, Carleton men’s basketball has set the standard of success for OUA and USPORTS. On top of their undeniable postseason success, Carleton has also posted 11 undefeated regular seasons.
As far back as statistics show, the Ravens began their history with an eleven-year playoff streak from 1962-73. This included three trips to the CIAU national championship tournament and two perfect regular seasons. This early era of Ravens basketball was spearheaded by hall-of-fame coach Ernie Zoppa, as well as many legendary players. Most notably, Tom Gorman, who still maintains the Ravens record for highest career points per game over sixty years since setting the mark.
The 1970s and 1980s saw only modest success for Carleton as the Ravens missed the playoffs six times from 1974-90. In 1988, they managed to return to a CIAU national championship tournament, breaking a 20-year drought. Noteworthy Ravens of this era include hall-of-famers Pat Stoqua, Bill Holmes, and Rick Powers, as well as all-time field goal percentage leader Tom Cholock. The biggest Raven of this time, however, was the legendary Ravens all-time rebounding leader, Jonathan Love. Love is the only player to have his number retired by the Ravens and was a two-time Carleton Male Athlete of the Year winner.
The 1990s were a tough decade for the Ravens, as they missed the playoffs six straight seasons from 1992-98. Carleton did not win a playoff game from 1989 until their OUA East semifinal win against rival uOttawa in the 1999 playoffs. However, at the start of the 1999-2000 season, the Ravens men’s basketball team appointed Dave Smart as their new head coach, beginning one of the most dominant eras in the history of Canadian university sports.
Coach Smart led the Ravens to an inconceivable 14 national championship victories in 19 seasons before stepping down in 2019. In this time, Carleton recorded eight undefeated regular seasons, only missed the national championship tournament two times, and recorded an astounding 384-26 OUA record over Smart’s coaching tenure. Smart’s 93.7% conference win percentage is undoubtedly the highest in Ravens history.
Under current head coach Taffe Charles, the Ravens have tacked on four more national titles, another undefeated regular season, and continue to be a force within the OUA and among all of USPORTS. Carleton seeks its 19th national title and 13th Wilson Cup in 2026-27.
Conference Championships
Carleton Ravens men’s basketball has won the Wilson Cup twelve times, the third-most of any OUA program in history. The Ravens were OUA champions in 2003, 2004, 2005, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2012, 2013, 2015, 2018, 2019, and 2020.
National Championships
Carleton Ravens men’s basketball has won the USports National Championship eighteen times in their history - the most of any program in Canada. They have hoisted the W. P. McGee Trophy in 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2009, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2019, 2020, 2022, 2023, and this past season in 2026.
